Emergency Fund for Maui Fires
This fund focuses immediate and targeted financial support to communities in Maui most disproportioantly affected by wildfires, aiming to provide rapid relief, shelter, and resources for those impacted by the crisis rooted in and led by Native Hawaiian communities. By swiftly allocating resources to community resilience initiatives, and post-fire recovery, the fund seeks to mitigate the short-term and long-term consequences of the Maui fires, promoting a speedy and effective response.
Why Now: The devastating impact of recent wildfires underscores the urgency of a Maui Fires fund. As of August 11, 2023, the Maui wildfires burned 2,170 acres of land. This includes the West Maui mountains, the slopes of Haleakala, and the slopes of Pu'u Kukui. As of August 11, PDC and FEMA estimated that 2,207 buildings had been destroyed, with a total of 2,719 exposed to the fires. They set the damage estimate at $5.52 billion.
